Aligning with vocation supports our fulfillment and emotional well-being.
Depth psychologist James Hollis on living meaningfully
“If it isn’t meaningful, you can’t pay me enough to do it… Vocation refers to a calling that arises from the soul rather than external expectations or societal pressures.”
Depth psychologist James Hollis, PhD comments:
“If what I’m doing is not meaningful, you can’t pay me enough to do it. You know, you could pay somebody a million dollars a week, but if it’s not meaningful, in a short while, it’ll feel like a prison. It’ll feel like you’re not getting paid enough.
“And so, we we have to recognize there’s something in us that already knows. That’s the point. Something in us knows what’s right for us.”

The Depth Psychology publisher summarizes: “In this compilation, three extraordinary Jungian teachers – James Hollis, Ken James and Jean Shinoda Bolen – offer wisdom on living meaningfully. We will learn how to be more true to ourselves and uncover our gifts.
“We will discover how to connect with our inner wisdom and welcome synchronicities. Finally, we will see that even during inevitable times of suffering, we can find a calling.”

Excerpt from Finding Your Vocation - interview with James Hollis by Sunita Sehmi, Thrive Global.
“James Hollis, a PhD and Jungian analyst in Washington D.C. Hollis started his career as a professor of humanities before a midlife crisis brought him to the Jung Institute in Zurich. The author of 19 books, Hollis is one of the best interpreters of Carl Jung’s work.
“Vocation is rooted in the Latin vocation, meaning a “call,” a “summons,” or an “invitation.”
“Part 2 of my interview series with James Hollis discusses the difference between work and vocation. We theoretically do work to put food on our table, and it’s certainly relevant. Vocation is whatever you call to do with your life.”
Interviewer: James, you often speak about the importance of vocation. Can you explain why vocation is so central to your work and thinking?
“In its most profound sense, Vocation refers to a calling that arises from the soul rather than external expectations or societal pressures.
“It’s a powerful force because it represents an inner imperative, a sense of purpose that is uniquely ours.
“When we align our lives with our vocation, we live in greater harmony with our true selves, essential for personal fulfillment and psychological well-being.”
